As the world economy is faced with challenges from global environmental problems, resource shortages and energy price increases, clean technologies are recognized as vital for economic growth.
The Wellington Region has key research capabilities in waste to energy processing, marine, distributed generation, sustainable design, clean transport and geospatial technology. The region is committed to developing technologies that not only harness renewable materials and reduce emissions and waste but also use these technologies to produce low carbon products.
In November 2010 New Zealand’s first purpose built Clean Technology Centre opened. The Centre, located in Otaki on the Kapiti Coast, has the capacity to house 20 of the region’s clean technology businesses. Currently housing 14 clean technology businesses, the Centre provides an environment for the commercialization of clean technology research.
