Blended Fuel Solutions (BFSNZ) and Alternative Petroleum Technologies (APT) are two companies making a difference on a national and international scale on how society and industry use liquid fuels now and into the future.
As humanity is starting to see the end of cheap and abundant fossil fuels we will all have to reassess the way we gather and use liquid fuels in the future. At BFSNZ and APT we have been developing technologies that will assist and help in this transition from the post era of cheap fossil fuel.
By using patented processes and chemicals, BFSNZ and APT can provided many benefits to the way we all use liquid fuels heading into the future, be it by making each liter of fuel go further (3%) or by significantly reducing tailpipe emissions (Co2-3% nox-10/15% PM-50%) and by providing a decentralized fuel blending option (bio/mineral blending).
The technology is based around the addition of water to fuel in very fine droplet form then special additives are added to keep the water suspended, this is known as emulsion fuel. A good example of an emulsion in our daily lives is mayonnaise.
Emulsion fuel is now becoming a real option for users of fuel all around the world, from refineries burning waste residual fuel for the processing of crude oil, international shipping fleets, right down to improving emissions on old school buses.
The technology of emulsion fuel also has a huge part to play in the new future of renewable fuels. A concept which is now growing globally called “Community Fuels” which ultimately is a decentralised system in which local growers of renewable liquid fuels (be it soy, corn, rapeseed, coconuts or algae) can use emulsion blending technology with existing fossil fuels to provide a blended fuel option for its local communities.
The other key point with emulsion fuel is it is known as a “drop in/drop out” fuel solution, there is no engine modifications required and very little fuel infrastructure changes to the existing fuel supply system, so at any point operators can change back to their previous supply just by refueling.
